June 2006

The Davis family has participated in our first athletic event! On June 21st was the "Longest Day Run/Walk" here on base and it was a gorgeous day to have it (besides the wind). It started at about midnight and it was still light outside, which we have gotten used to now that it is warmer here. At this time of year, we actually don't have that much darkness, so it's easy to lose even more sleep because we don't realize that it's late. There have been many a nights where we think it's about 7 or 8 p.m. and we look at the clock and it's around 11 p.m. or midnight.

The "Longest Day" was fun...Ryan participated in the 5k run while Hayden and I went on the 3k walk. She was in her stroller/car seat combo the whole time and fell asleep pretty quickly after we started. It actually felt so good to be out in the fresh air and we all had an excellent time as a family. It is times like these and participating in community events that we will miss when we leave Iceland.

On another note - Hayden has been smiling SO much more lately and we think she is recognizing our faces and voices...so we think the smiling is a genuine reaction to her Mommy and Daddy as opposed to having gas. She is still sleeping sporadically but last week, she had one night where she slept for five hours straight, which was great for us. It has to be hard for her to get used to night and day here, though, considering that it doesn't turn dark. So maybe when we get back to the States, it will be easier on her to fall into a normal sleep routine. All in all, everything is going great with Hayden...she is happy and healthy, which was all we ask for our baby and we are all thriving in our new family unit. We can't wait to see everyone soon...

We've had to go back to putting hats on Hayden...

Note the "mad scientist" photo in the photo album labeled Hayden IV. We have found that when she is angry, her hands search and grab all over her head until she grabs onto that little area of hair and she PULLS pretty hard. I'm surprised that she hasn't pulled it out because I've felt her grip on hair, namely mine, and it's a STRONG grip. So, with the cap, maybe we can save her from pulling out the little hair that she does have.

Lately Ryan and I have been trying to get Hayden into somewhat of a routine and for her fall asleep on her own. Because we are in the time zone that we are here, and will be in a different time zone in Indy, and yet another different one in Arizona, the attempt at setting a routine has been difficult, but we are trying our best. As for her getting herself to sleep, that is also a difficult but sometimes successful project for us. There are times that we lay her down and she may fuss for a little while, but she does put herself to sleep eventually. Then there are those other times when she has been bathed, fed, held, rocked, and read to and we lay her down and her fussiness elevates to all out screaming at the top of her lungs. Again, we are doing our best...

What's funny is that through all of this, we think Hayden is the funniest, most adorable baby in the world. We love her little frowny mouth when she's crying and I think that there is a little part of both me and Ryan that take pride in holding her and being the one to get her to sleep when she is most colicky. We still stare at her while she's asleep in her crib and are amazed at the new life that was created and sleeping before us.
